Born in Ireland, McCarthy moved to Australia aged eight, a powerful rider McCarthy soon gained the attention of cycling Australia and won a place on their program.
Having ridden in the shadow of Caleb Ewan as the emerging talent of Australian sprinting, McCarthy demonstrated his potential in the elite ranks with a win at the Herald SunTour in 2014.
“Maybe I was a bit lucky with positioning and I just gave it 100%, for me the hard part was getting to the line with those established sprint trains,” explained McCarthy of his break through victory.
Robert moved to Europe with SEG Racing but returned to the southern hemisphere after a season. The twenty-two year old McCarthy took time out from racing in 2016 but returns to the elite end of the sport with JLT Condor.
