Russell Downing has decided to move on from JLT Condor after several years with the team. Downing was JLT Condor’s road captain during his time and took several UCI victories for the squad.

JLT Condor and Fonzy

JLT Condor’s road leader Russ Downing is a talent and a legend of British cycle sport,  known to many as Fonzy. Downing’s early career was characterised with successes on the track, with Downing taking countless wins both at a British level as well as at a World Cup level.

A former National Road Race Champion, Downing featured in the criterium team as well as stage race squad. Notably in 2016 and 2017 playing the all important leadout man role for Chris Lawless and in 2017 Brenton Jones, helping both riders secure several UCI stage victories.

2016 Tour du Loir et Cher

Downing opened his account early in 2016, navigating the wet streets of Chailles, France to take his first UCI stage win for JLT Condor ahead of Eddie Planckaert of Lotto Soudal.

2016 National Championship clean sweep

A dominating performance from JLT Condor saw an unprecedented clean sweep of the podium at the National Circuit Championship, hosted in Birmingham. Downing finished second behind team mate, Chris Lawless with Jon Mould taking third.


CiCLE Classic team prize

At the 2016 edition of the CiCLE Classic, Conor Dunne found the line after a brave solo attack at 2km to go. Downing and Chris Lawless headed the peloton home to take the team prize.

Tour of the Wolds

Downing successfully paired with Brenton Jones in 2017 to create a duo that could rarely be beaten. When a crashed occurred on the final bend in the Tour of Taiwan, it was left to Downing to turn his leadout into an ultra long sprint for the line.

Leadout turns into sprint in Taiwan

Russell showed experience and quick thinking in the Tour of Taiwan. Downing claimed 2nd on the stage after sprinting for nearly 1km.

Russ soldiers on despite CiCLE Classic crash

Russ was caught in a huge crash on the finish sections of the 2017 CiCLE Classic. The Yorkshireman jumped back on the bike, despite huge cuts and continued on. He crossed the line in 10th after riding back into the peloton to support Brenton in the sprint.

Tour of Yorkshire ends before it has begun

In the closing metres of the race, Downing is shunted from behind and taken down in a crash. The incident left him with a broken collarbone. He crossed the line but was unable to continue on day two.

Disaster! Russell breaks his collarbone on the opening day of the the Tour of Yorkshire. The incident puts him off the bike for 6-8 weeks.

Russ bounces back in Korea

Thanks to the hard work of HMT Hospitals, Russell is back cycling within weeks of his broken collarbone. The hospital gives him the all clear to return to racing at the tough Tour of Korea. Russell takes up the leadout role supporting Brenton Jones to two stage victories.


Team effort at Tour of Britain

In an effort to defend Graham Briggs’ points jersey at the Tour of Britain. Russell spent most of stage 7 sprinting for all the available points at the intermediate sprint sections. His ride earned him the most aggressive rider award for the stage.
